(Change load order in initrd image) did indeed fix it for me. I rebuilt the initrd for my kernel.
Using Intrepid, 2.6.27-9-generic, ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp. Hi-Speed 21-in-1 Flash Card Reader/Writer
Up until now unplugging the Alcor Flash reader has been necessary to get the machine to operate.
