External HDD using USB 1.1 is practically useless. Similarly for digital cameras, mp3 players, scanners, etc. Noone wants to wait hours for their music to get to the player on ubuntu especially when everything is OK on windows. Both USB 2.0 and suspend&resume are essential these days for ubuntu.
