I had problems with my WD MyBook 250Gig. Actually, I had two separate and distinct issues. I was running the latest Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and had the USB drive disconnecting with similar messages, and also had some difficulties if the drive was plugged in at startup (would work fine if it was plugged in after boot).

Anyway, the max_sectors (setting it to 128) fixed my problem. In addition, moving to Gutsy Gibbon appears to have fixed the issues for real. I no longer need to set max_sectors and I have had no problems yet.
