Try this on your FreeAgent. It solved the issue for me with spinning down.

echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_disk/X\:0\:0\:0/allow_restart

This solved the IO/error but apparently it doesn't work for everyone.

echo 1024 > /sys/block/sdX/device/max_sectors
