I understand this is not a true solution, but
sudo modprobe -r sdhci && sleep 0.5 && sudo rmmod mmc_block || sleep 0.5 && sudo modprobe sdhci
works for me in hardy. If I remove the card, I have to give the command again but at least I can access my SD card.
