Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-10-386

When I boot with the 2.6.22 Gutsy kernel, I get:

[ 53.219986] irq 9: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
<snip>
[ 53.224066] Disabling IRQ #9
[ 53.238272] ata1.00: ATA-5: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, 17.07W17, max UDMA/100
[ 53.238344] ata1.00: 156301488 sectors, multi 16: LBA
[ 53.280821] ata1.01: ATA-7: ST3160815A, 3.AAD, max UDMA/100
[ 53.280892] ata1.01: 312581808 sectors, multi 16: LBA48
[ 53.298216] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100

Booting with 'irqpoll' fixes the problem, but I don't see why I would need to use this option since the 2.6.20 Feisty kernel boots fine without the irqpoll option.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.
Please include as attachments the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
4. Please run the command 'cat /proc/interrupts > interrupts.txt' and attach the resulting file 'interrupts.txt' to this bug report.
5. Please run the command 'sudo dmidecode > dmidecode' and atttach the resulting file 'dmidecode' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance!

the bug is still exist on my system ( recently updated gutsy, 2007.09.13 ).
Sometimes boot without irqpoll, but usually not.

nyékhelyi gábor - It would be a good idea to identify your system, by including the output of 'sudo dmidecode' as Stephan did, to determine whether or not you have the same bug as he does.

So I have the same bug with an i965 chipset board ( ABIT AB9, a ICH8 ( not ICH8R, no AHCI ) chipset, and a JMICRON JMB363 controller ( for PATA, and AHCI compatible SATA ) ). Wery rarely it boots, but usually it freeses ( the kernel logger doesn't start that time ). With ' 'irqpoll' it boots smoothly.

I hope this bug will be fixed, because some of my friends have i965 and p35 boards, and they have the same problem ( they are newcomers from win, so these bugs disappoints them )

Same problem with custom system. Motherboard is ABIT IP35-E bought straight from Fry's Electronics. W/JMicron JMB368 IDE Controller. Attached are lspci and dmidecode outputs.

Also, I can't seem to add irqpoll as a default option for the kernels in menu.lst with kopt :( Grub doesn't seem to respect it.

The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the update. That good to hear that things are working with the newer kernel. I'll be marking this as "Fix Released" against the Hardy kernel. Thanks!
