Just an update on my Thinkpad R52 running Fiesty. As stated earlier, I tried this fix:

HIBERNATE_MODE in /etc/default/acpi-support to:

HIBERNATE_MODE=platform

as requested by csd. Unfortunately, although it worked for two days, I suspended the machine earlier this afternoon (power-saving mode rather than the powered down shutdown or whatever of hibernate) and now the sound is no longer working, even after a completely shutdown and restart. In addition, occasionally I'm getting an extremely high pitched feedback-like whine from the machine and quieter and lower in pitch whines slightly more frequently, usually when I move the laptop but not always. In the acpi-support file, there's a line refering to the suspend function and changing it from S3 to S1. I'm assuming that has something to do with amount of power conserved and I was hesitant to fiddle with it because I really have no idea what changing the values does.

I'd like to try using the unpatched kernel, since it seemed to work for a lot of people, but I'm very new at running a new linux system and I don't know how to compile and install a new kernel while leaving the rest of the system (GUI settings, etc) unchanged. If anyone's willing to help me out with the specifics of this operation, please feel free to email me at shmi85 at yahoo dot com. Thanks!
