I tried to fiddle around with the settings in /etc/default/acpi-support, but I did not get anything satisfactory (i.e. sometimes, I was able to get back to X, but nothing worked, or the OS freezed with a lot of text, etc...)

If somebody has the same problem using Feisty and the stock kernel (2.6.20-15), please shout!

Until then, I guess I'll avoid suspending my laptop :-(
