Good news, I was able to fix the X server black screen issue as well.

Like I mentioned I had experienced a similar GUI issue with Breezy and managed to fix it by installing some alternative drivers from X.org, 'fglrx' drivers I believe, but my memory is vague about this.

When I upgraded to Dapper, these drivers didn't get included in the upgrade proces as they are in the Universe package location and therefore not part of the default "legal" Ubuntu package locations for Dapper.

I fixed this by adding the "Universe" package locations to my sources.lst file followed by a apt-get update/upgrade process and now I have GUI.

I attached my xorg.conf file for perusal in case anyone else needs this info.
