I installed "ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso".
I rebooted several times.
no problem
I then ran:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic
I rebooted several times.
no problem
I then ran:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic
I rebooted and
the dimness appeared
I installed "ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso" again.
I rebooted several times and each time no problem.
Then I ran:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic

So as far as I am concerned the problem is created with the "linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic" install.
