Neither of the fixes suggested by Isaac, Brian or Crack34d worked on my Thinkpad T61 running up-to-date Intrepid. Instead, my solution was to follow the instructions outlined in Bug #275692 to add a file

  /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi

containing the line

  SUSPEND_MODULES="ath_pci"
