Your kernel and X drivers do not seem to match. It is hard to pin this problem down but I suspect you might be seeing the hidden file bug (in which case this is more of a support query than a bug report).

Can you indicate what the output of
dpkg -l \*nvidia\* | grep ii
is, whether the information on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia helps you and whether you have attempted to manually install the driver?
