bionade: Is your machine on a LAN? If so, you can install openssh-server, and when you lose the keyboard/mouse, you can SSH in from another machine and take a look at things. Just an idea.
I will also be betting my Inspiron 1501 back soon; when that happens, I hope to be able to try to find out something more meaningful about this bug.
