I had a driver build at some point (may have been a backport, may have been from the ubuntu -17 kernel), in which I got the Microcode errors *and* I could see networks, which seems like what you're getting?

Problem was that the system was unresponsive while it scanned, every two seconds for ten seconds. But as described four posts up, creating that /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945 file fixed it all.
