Since Pako (I think it was Pako) brought up a good point for "what about Gnome 3?", I thought "what about Gnome 3?". :) So I tried it as well to get a better data point for Mark on the upcoming major change in Gnome that essentially *obsoletes* this discussion and bug...

With Gnome 3 my usage changed quite a bit. The minimize, max and close buttons weren't used very often. The only button of those 3 even relevant after Gnome 3 releases will be the CLOSE button, and I'm not sure about that close button either depending on what else occurs before Gnome 3's actual release... This data seems to go along with my assertion that whatever is being planned, needs to occur on Gnome3 where there is a MAJOR paradigm shift for the desktop UI, rather than tacking something onto an existing/tired UI everyone is already comfortable with. For those that haven't tried Gnome3 yet, I highly recommend it just for the experience and heads up if nothing else. It's very intuitive for the changes, and while it's not perfect yet, it's in better shape than KDE4 was on the first couple of releases. The close button moving to the left wouldn't have irked me at all either on Gnome 3, since the upper left of the screen is where I was spending a lot of time anyway switching windows. In fact the close button on the upper right in Gnome 3 irked me. But that's Gnome 3, and this change is going into the old/obsolete Gnome2 where upper right is still "correct".
I found quick instructions here: http://digitizor.com/2009/11/10/get-a-first-hand-feel-of-gnome-3-shell-in-ubuntu-karmic-koala/

So Mark, whatever feature you are planning, I think you would be well advised to tie it instead to Gnome 3 where this button fiasco doesn't really exist, and keep the pitchfork wielding bloggers off of you. Is it too late to make Gnome3 the default for Lucid? ;)
