I also have had this problem, stopping the mentioned GNOME components didn't solve the problem, although it did bring the X server CPU usage down from about 50% to about 20%. I have an IBM ThinkPad X32, with a "ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP)" 16MB.
