On Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 i386, all patches applied, I had the same problem using the Java image libraries.
Using this command

sudo sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g' /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so

it was fixed.
