can't add new language

Bug Description

I'm trying to add an additonal language in System -> Administration -> Lanaguage support, by clicking Install / Remove languages. I click on the desired language (say, Hungarian or Japanese or both), then click on 'Apply Changes'

after this, the window is grayed out, and a spinner starts - but will never stop. there's no package download / progress bar window appearing (which i'd expect), nothing. the spinner just goes on forever, like over 10 minutes, and nothing happens. there's no system load either at this time - it seems to be blocking on something.

I'd expect this to 'just work'

This happened to me too. I tried to install Spanish and Esperanto, but it didn't seem to be doing anything.

might be related - though that issue is reported to be solved by recent software updates.

on my system, everything is updated to the latest package, but the problem still persists

BTW, is there a work-around somehow?

You can install the language pack from terminal:
sudo aptitude install language-pack-xx

xx is the two letter code of your language.

yeah, but will this include everything, including keyboard input methods, etc?

everything that the UI would install?

Hmm... my guess would be that your package cache is screwed up.
Does 'apt-get update' from the command line return any error message?
Have you updated from a previous Ubuntu release or did you install it from scratch?

Could you please post the output of 'dpkg -l | grep language-' ?

I'm still experiencing this issue. is there any more information I can provide?

manually installing language-pack-gnome-xx and language-support-xx seems to work well though.

Ákos Maróy, after providing the requested information you can mark the issue as confirmed so they look at it and (possibly) ask for more information.

My apt-get update shows no errors either, and I also installed ubuntu 10.04 from scratch.

thanks.
