Marco's procedure is actually incomplete. You shoud also add "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header under "set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE}" and run update-grub. You may also have to unblacklist vesafb and rebuild your initramfs.
