I have a similar problem.
Since when I upgraded to kubuntu 7.10, my keyboard volume key only controls the "main" channel. The problem is, that the main channel does not affect my rear speakers (I have 4.1 setup). Before I solved this problem by setting in kmix PCM as the main channel. Now this does not work anymore.
