Yes, it works (no failure) fine from the Kubuntu LiveCD.
So I just now played with it more, and discovered that we have ALT-M defined as a keyboard shortcut in KDE->Settings, to do a "Move Window" function. This appears to be what triggers the failure in open office.
You can experience it yourself by setting the same ALT-M shortcut in KDE->SystemSettings->KeyboardMouse->KeyboardShortcuts.
So, yes, still a bug in there (but in which? KDE keyboard handling, or OpenOffice?). But less severe than originally perceved.
