Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

From comment #6:

The API (Liblindicator) which the indicator-sound uses expects a GtkImage as the icon. GtkImage does provide the same fall back mechanism which Sebastian has pointed to above with GtkIcon. It is a known issue across all indicators and one which will need to be resolved shortly.

This is not an indicator applet bug. its the icon theme you are using which apparently dont seem to have the icon for indicator sound. Its gnome-icon theme.

affects: indicator-applet (Ubuntu) → gnome-icon-theme (Ubuntu)
Changed in gnome-icon-theme (Ubuntu):

True, I had not thought about that.
Though, the icon disappeared some days ago, I don't remember when, after an
upgrade. Before that, I had no icon problems.

The issue is an indicator-sound one which doesn't use fallback icons

affects: gnome-icon-theme (Ubuntu) → indicator-sound (Ubuntu)

http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkIconTheme.html, using gtk_icon_theme_lookup_icon() with the fallback flag set should be working, the spec has also be updated to use audio-volume-low-null which should fallback nicely

bug #543592 is a duplicate of bug #542365, so you need to edit the duplicate status of the first and then mark the second as a duplicate.
But I don't understand why you think #542365 is a duplicate of this, as it is related to the volume applet, not to the volume icon
