The battery status info should be available easily without having to open a new window in my opinion too. As a suggestion: what's your opinion about having an item in the power-manager's indicator menu showing a percentage bar of the battery, and the status (charging, discharging, charged) as an icon. Something like the volume indicator applet, but with a percentage bar instead of the slider, and with other icons, and below that a battery status Menu like the Sound preferences item in the volume indicator applet... the consistency would improve a bit, and no new window showing lots of unnecessary things would open, only the indicator.
