Bug Description

In the approach of the development of Intrepid Ibex a new Theme was announced to substitute for the outdated Human.
In alpha 6 is still no new design inserted. The Artwork team has delivered position in addition and has explained that they develop only alternative designs.
The Communty asks himself who develops the announced new design? Many fear even that the old Human default remains - what would be a great pity.

When I look at Themes like "Dust" or "New-Wave", "New-Human" is a real bad choice. It's neither fresh nor economical. Working with it isn't real fun because of low contrasts and the colours are looking anything but modern. Just my personal opinion. I wouldn't use it.

NewHuman istn't the default. There's no new theme in Intrepid, and the Artwork-Team is not responsible to create an new theme.

Cheers. Why is that the case? Canonical should rethink their announcement politics, because since more than a year a new theme for Ubuntu has been promised now, making the community eagerly waiting for it.
And now? It is again postponed - or rather we don't even know what has happened to it. Will there be a new theme in the next version? We don't know it. If Canonical doesn't want to loose its trustworthiness, they should only make announcements which will be realised.

It might sound ridiculous to mock about such an apparently minor topic in this way, but the look and feel of an operating system is a major factor for people when choosing an OS. Or do you think most of the people buy a Mac because its software is so great?
- And after all, I don't want to excuse myself for the age old look of Ubuntu when installing this amazing Linux Distribution on a friend's Computer.

I thought most people who bought Macs did so because they hadn't heard of Linux or were under the impression it was difficult to use or they need some proprietary software like Photoshop or QuickBooks, but they don't want to deal with Windows' virus issues. Or they think the hardware looks good.

I'm using Kin. I think it'd be a good new default. It's not far off from Human (I like the Murrine version of Human), but it's a bit more orange and has nice titlebars (which I don't get to see because I use a tiling window manager :( )

Intrepid Ibex will ship with a new theme. A competition has been run by the website Deviant Art, the winner of this will have their theme as the default desktop in Ubuntu 8.10. The artwork team is not responsible for the official themes, only the extras. So by October 30th Intrepid Ibex should look completely different.

I do like New Clear on "intrepid incoming" on the wiki. I think the menus should be semi-transparent.

Can you link to the Devianart contest site?

Currently there is no DeviantArt contest and it is extremely unlikely for thier to be one. Futhermore if there is some type of contest it would be for a wallpaper not a theme and it will not be in time for intrepid.

I think it's very confusing the fact that the art-team is not responsible for the official theme.

Who is then?

We have plenty nice themes out there that would replace current human theme. Dark themes are nice to have as alternate but sure not a good idea to have as a main theme.

Why don't we run a contest to choose a new theme based on one of the many available out there?

Hi all of you here ;) after reading this posts I can say that the main Ubuntu's look&feel, or interface need a big review. Yes the MacOS looks good, Vista also, but Ubuntu need something different, surely not to introduce dark themes as default; Apple slowly leaves the Aqua interface to something more simple, more clean and efficient, at least this i think is the direction they took... Orange and brown is not bad, it reminds sun but no fresh, warm but no cold, I think here need to combine these items to really come out something new; I'm sure a lot of you know what must be done for ; some impressions with a little angry that my preffered OS hasn't yet a solid identity for impact. What do you think, guys? cheers, cris ;)

it's really a pity that we still have the same old-looking theme :( I had already told all my friends that the new ubuntu would have a new (this time, nice) look, and they were all frustrated when they saw that the theme is the same....

Marking as invalid as it's not really a bug in human-theme per se, and either way the original reporter's issue has been resolved by the new light-themes package.

Changed in human-theme (Ubuntu):
