Whilst Tom's work-around may work, it goes against the Hardy hardware detection scheme specified in <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/HardyHardwareDetection>, one of the aims of which is to drop the plugdev and scanner groups. IMHO the "Proper" solution is the second one proposed by Alexander Dorovsky.
