Ok, as mentioned, for NEW users or others who are not as computer literate, having to explain that their share is in a hidden using a seemly strange name is not user-friendly. It's supposed to be Linux for Human Beings. If I shared out my movies folder, and set it up on my girlfriend's laptop so that she could watch them with VLC, or mplayer, she would immediately ask me why she can't find any of the movies in VLC, but she can find them in the file browser (Nautilus).

I have given plenty of reason as to why it should default to being easy to find, so now I ask why everyone is so against it? If it helps users, why is it such a bad thing?

So to answer your question, sure, I could make a symlink.....I COULD....not my girlfriend, not my grandmother, not my father, etc. And these are the people Ubuntu is targeted to.
