Very interesting... I'v used gedit several times and i *never* noticed that the pointer was disappearing!
[why i write this comment is not to add a me too , but rather , when i looked at the title i was not happy with the pointer disappearing and wanted to comment against this! ;) on testing it it sounds very sane. ]

So now , how this is being done by gedit ? is this a xulrunner bug or a gtk only bug?
