This is a fix:

jl@CQ60:~$ sudo modprobe -r pcspkr

jl@CQ60:~$ echo "blacklist pcspkr" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

The loud beep is definitely a big paper cut.
