I'm experiencing the same behavior. Using "xset dpms force off" will switch off the screen successfully, but only when the screensaver is not running. Doing "gnome-screensaver-command --lock && xset dpms force off", the screen switches off for a minute or two, then switches back on as a black screen with a mouse cursor on it. At present, I'm having to remember to manually switch off my monitor in the evenings.
