Comment 42 for bug 542343

Alvils Berzins, perhaps try setting the swappiness parameter to vm.swappiness=100 on machines with low ram. I find this makes things much smoother.

To do so:

1. Open this text file as root: /etc/sysctl.conf
2. Append this to the end: vm.swappiness=100
3. Reboot.
