This is still happening on my Dell netbook with the standard (not netbook) version of Karmic installed, updated through this morning. It just happened to me after I logged off and logged back in to Gnome. There were duplicate volume-control icons. But then I looked away and looked back a minute or two later, and the icons had redrawn correctly! (My info is in Bug #555995, set as a duplicate to this one).

Runing 'top' shows me that compiz.real is running.
