I would like to add that ever since I have installed a different theme (the Dichotomy theme in the Ubuntu repositories) the corruption in the top panel is non-existent. I can confirm this since I reverted to the default ambiance theme many times only to find the corruption return to the panel on almost every boot. However, using the dichotomy theme seems to have eradicated the issue completely.
