Just to follow up on this, the following is in the terminal but doesn't seem to be in main.log:

That "*** stack smashing detected ***: /usr/bin/perl terminated line" is quite disconcerting.
Also, I recently did an apt-get upgrade which had two instances of the following lines:

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
