This is for ubuntu people: As fixing or replacing X can be complcated, there is the patch in master git tree ( http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/commit/?id=dbf844c012894166e312470f0d98560d5e426613 ) that could be ported to 2.6 in packaging . you would have working gimp on this broken setup without radical changes.
