On one of my pc's I get a random login, on this IBM ThinkCentre with Intel i845 I get a "black screen of death" where nothing works except power off.

sudo edit /etc/default/grub

remove:

splash

sudo update-grub

then reboot fixed it I think because it's been running for hours. See my bug 396843 for logs etc. however it does look like this bug is well understood.
