@Francesco Fumanti - Thank you. Editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager with /usr/sbin/gdm or /usr/bin/kdm works for me.
The following commands still do not seem to work: $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
