I am also seeing this problem on Lucid Lynx (10.04). Starting "gdesklets" gives me:

Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Connecting to daemon [### ]
=========================================[date and time]=====
Could not import tiling module!

Connecting to daemon [ ### ]
Cannt establish connection to daemon: timeout!
The log file might help you solving the problem.

Of course, there is nothing in the directory ~/.gdesklets/logs...
