Bug Description

... firefox crashed

... [ GUTSY ] Firefox crashes on startup

I'm not able to open Firefox at all. If I open firefox through the terminal, I get :

***MEMORY-WARNING***: firefox-bin[6291]: GSlice: g_thread_init() must be called before all other GLib functions; memory corruption due to late invocation of g_thread_init() has been detected; this program is likely to crash, leak or unexpectedly abort soon...

(gecko:6291): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Arial 11.9990234375'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The only way I get firefox to work is to install the feisty one.

A proper reinstall of Gutsy from the Tribe 2 fixed the problem.

I think that this bug can be closed.

On which version of Ubuntu are you? And did you install Ubuntu from the CD or from a dist-upgrade?

sorry forgot to add,
I'm using gutsy, installed from tribe 3 cd.

I have installed all the new updates,

and firefox starts up, asks about sessions and even start to load pages and then crashes

It seems to be a font problem. I can't confirm the bug has it now works after install of Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 2.

It would be great if somebody that use Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 3 can confirm this.

Thank you Mertiki and thomas coopman for submitting this report.

Could you please try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions
on [1], or upload the crash report that probably was generated during
the crash and that should be located at /var/crash/ to [2].

Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if
this crash is reproducible describe the steps that lead to it (it is
very important for us to have a test case for each crash).

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance.

H. Montoliu

I actually can't reproduce the crash so I think that only thomas can.

Here's how to do a backtrace :

We are going to close this report as seems that it's no more reproducible. Please feel free to reopen when you have more information at hand.

Don't doubt to report any other crashes/issues you might have in the future.

Getting the same crash (mostly when scrolling) with a fresh install of Gutsy Tribe 5 Kubuntu. My Gutsy Tribe 5 Ubuntu worked fine, so I think it might be Kubuntu-specific.

Terminal Output before crash:

(firefox-bin:10099): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'DejaVu Serif Oblique 7.5'
Segmentation fault (Core dumped).

There is no crash report in /var/crash/, but I made (and attached) a debugging log as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs.

Changing my font from DejaVu Serif to DejaVu Sans fixed the issue for now.

I think we need a test case to reproduce this crash. I've tried it by setting the fonts to DejaVu Serif as suggests Rico and I'm not able to reproduce the crash.

Perhaps this helps reproducing the bug: not every website causes a crash, but this one invariably did when scrolling down:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=235067&page=28

Also, please note that I didn't have any issues with Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5, but only with a fresh install of Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 (haven't tried earlier versions).

Ok, I can reproduce this. I am fully up to date with Gutsy Tribe 5 as of September 5, 10:30 PM, Mountain Standard Time.

I moved my .mozilla folder aside and do the following:

1) Run firefox this way -- I can try another way if a dev prefers it
 /usr/lib/firefox/run-mozilla.sh -g /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin -d gdb 2>&1 | tee gdb-firefox-crash.txt

2) Enter the debugging info into gdb as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

3) I don't import any bookmarks from other browsers. (1st time setup because I moved ~/.mozilla)

4) Paste in URL http://www.et.byu.edu/groups/it466/schedule.htm

5) Double click "Google Concept Mapping" in the first notes cell. Firefox now crashes

6) Enter the rest of the gdb stuff from the wiki

At least tonight I can reproduce this crash every single time. :-)
Since I moved my .mozilla folder, I don't have any Firefox plugins installed. I also removed the flash and java plugins prior to running this test (it crashes exactly the same with them installed or not).

System notes:
P4 3 GHz, 1GB RAM
I think this box started as an Edgy box, but it might have been a Feisty beta.
I had turned the computer only only a few minutes before performing this test.
I do have a handfull of freebie fonts in my home directory, but none of them is DejaVu anything.

Other:
When I just run "firefox" from the command line, I get the following:

me@Elements:/tmp$ firefox

(gecko:9962): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'DejaVu Serif Oblique 11.9990234375'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
me@Elements:/tmp$

Please let me know what I can do. I don't have a ton of time, but could invest a couple of hours if it would help squash this bug. Konqueror is OK, but I miss Firefox.

I don't know if this is a solution to the problem, or if I'm just avoiding the problem.

In following a different issue, I found that my computer has problems with some programs and hyperthreading. If I have hyperthreading enabled in the BIOS, firefox crashes, if I disable it, firefox doesn't crash (on the page listed above).

So, I don't know for sure if it's a problem in how firefox treats hyperthreaded machines, or if it's an actual bug in my BIOS or other hardware. Seeing as this machine is a cheap-o HP from Best Buy, my money is on it being a BIOS/hardware error.

I have Lenovo 3000 N100 with Intel Celeron (without HT). Firefox crashes as well :-(.

I got this same error every time I attempted to open FF:

ben@ben-desktop:~$ firefox -safe-mode

(gecko:13540): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Times 12'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
---------------

Removing the Times Truetype font I had installed fixed the problem, and now Firefox starts, though obviously this is not the ideal solution.
