Thank you for reporting this bug. I can confirm that this problem exists and is reproducible. The textbox using firefox-3 on ubuntu appears as it does in the screenshot. Using opera in ubuntu produces a textbox about half as long as the screenshot. Using firefox-3 in windows xp produces a text box that is perfectly aligned with the top links and is about a third as long as the screenshot.

The textbox using firefox-3 on ubuntu appears as it does in the screenshot <http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19209463/bug.png>. Using opera in ubuntu produces a textbox about half as long as the screenshot. Using firefox-3 in windows xp produces a text box that is perfectly aligned with the top links and is about a third as long as the screenshot.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. View http://www.baidu.com in both windows and linux versions of firefox
Actual Results:
The text box is not aligned with the top navigation links in linux. In windows, the same text box is aligned perfectly with the top navigation links.

Expected Results:
Windows and Linux versions of firefox should display the text box perfectly aligned with the top nav links.

I can confirm this bug. Moreover it looks like happen only if the encoding id utf8. Trying a iso-8859-1 put the text bar size to default size.
This problem happens only when there is no css width applied to the text box but anyway affects several pages. Some pages become unbrowsable too. Need to be fixed.

I confirm this bug in Ubuntu Server 8.10 with Openbox. However, on most websites that this problem appears on, no matter what character encoding I select the problem persists.

This Bug should not be marked invalid, as its prevalent in most sites, and is happening on firefox 3.0 and 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) as well. The width of text boxes on prominent sites like google.com is stretched as well (See attached screenshot). This bug renders complex forms unusable on Firefox and is a serious issue for me.

I get the same problem with firefox-3.5 in ubuntu 9.10 beta 64bit. The text boxes appear too wide when I use custom font settings for web pages (Please see attached screenshots). This happens when I use Lucida fonts that I downloaded from http://ubuntu-debs.googlecode.com/files/macfonts.tar.gz. With other fonts, everything works perfect.
