Here's another piece of info about this problem.

While I experience the master password issue at home as described above, there's another (related?) issue with the proxy login dialog.

At University when I start Firefox, I am prompted multiple times for the proxy login details because:

* Plugin Update wants to check for updates
* Multiple tabs are loading
