Wasn't FF2 the version that introduced session restore in Firefox? IIRC it was possible only with extensions in earlier versions of Firefox.

It looks like the password prompting is flawed since the start but as new features are added (session restore, improved threading) the flaw surfaces in more and more common use scenarios.
