I'd also vote for the always prompt for MP on startup, although that would so thoroughly mitigate the bug that no one would be available to test any fixes :)
Things seem better in the 3.1a2pre. I still see two MP prompts, but the races for the dialogs are gone and keyboard dialog focus is much less frustrating. I"m pretty sure the second dialog is because of one of my extensions (ReminderFox) which stores it's password for network authentication in the password list. And it seems that one only needs to enter the MP once and that hitting enter on subsequent dialogs is all that is required.
One complaint is that entering a wrong password results in another dialog but with no notification that a bad password has been entered. Although this is probably a different bug, possibly the bug concerning the ease with which the MP dialog can be spoofed by nasty unscrupulous people.
