I know I'm jumping in late, but I see this behavior (black images) as of Firefox 3.5.6 on Windows XP SP3 (native, no virtualization).
Images become black more often as the number of tabs increases. Special culprits are Wikipedia and OKCupid. Rebooting the machine fixes the problem, so this smells more like a memory leak in the already bloated Firefox.
