I was tracking this issue in 334951. It was suggested there that
this was a 'cairo' problem and upgrading the xorg server to 1.4.0.90 would fix
the problem. I upgraded last week and it seemed to work until I came across

I got the 'scaled image problem' as described in this bug report.
I set the option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" in xorg, and while this changed the
performance of X, does not resolve the problem.

The first display of the above page showed the left image and not the right.
Reloading the page showed the previous behaviour of partial image in the upper
left hand corner and the rest of the image black.
