Interestingly enough, I've found that the fglrx version in Lucid no longer gets this panic, even without disabling acpi-services or modifying GDM's upstart settings. However, the 8.720 driver also has other regressions, in things such as suspend/resume support. If anyone still DOES have the issue (and has it fixed with the acpi-services=off command, specifically), then we can say the bug still exists.
That "undefined symbol" is an entirely different bug.
