The Catalyst Control Center claims: 8.61.2

Did turning acpi-services=off workaround solve the crash for you in the first place [because this worked for me under 8.10 (32-bit, catalyst 9.3) and ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit, catalyst pre-9.4)]; see:
