I have ATI mobility X300 and I find radeon driver performance to be acceptable. However there's another problem that makes the driver unusable for me. It's the lack of support for powerplay technology. Using open-source driver my computer lasts just 1:20h on batter power as opposed to 2:30 on fglrx. I use my laptop on the go and I do need that extra time. Since there's no way to downgrade xserver I'm gonna spend the afternoon reinstalling ubuntu 8.10. If I knew this before the upgrade I wouldn't do it.
I think this "lower battery time on older ati cards issue" should be highlighted somewhere in the upgrade notes. Maybe even on the downloads page once jaunty is out because many new users switching to ubuntu have older hardware.
