There is ongoing effort to improve the open source 3D radeon/r200/r300 drivers (covering all radeon cards up to R500). Specifically for R3xx-R5xx GPU this add OpenGL 1.4 support (vs. OpenGL 1.3 in jaunty) and framebuffer object support. This work is being done in this mesa branch:

Since fglrx dropped support for R3xx-R5xx cards it would be nice to set up a testing PPA for jaunty for this improved driver for users that need these features and no longer can use the fglrx driver.
