Just to echo crwl's comments ... Using the HD 4850 card which is awesome under Windows, but in Ubuntu I don't even get smooth video playback, let alone decent opengl performance.

There doesn't seem to be much information about the ATI driver out on the net. Does anyone "in the know" have any info on an expected release date for a compatible driver ?

The problem is I suspect most users will blame Ubuntu rather than ATI if 8.10 breaks their video (this happened with Vista, for example). If ATI is unable or unwilling to support the newest X by release time, maybe it would make more sense to have it as an option but to use X from 8.04 by default.
