1) Does VLC or WMP in windows use opengl to playback video?
Well WMP I do not know, but VLC, you can choose
2) Does windows have the capability to use opengl in more than one software? or mac? Meaning, Is the problem that OpenGL cannot be used simultaneously (eg. compiz and google-earth) smoothly the major problem in ubuntu?
Well yes, when I was using Windows, it was possible.
3) does x11 as a playback device for Mplayer show video with less quality than OpenGL?
Yes or no, actually X11 rendering is usually less smooth, sometimes laggy. xv or ogl renderers tends to be smoother, with no need to rescale te video.
